Comer Hall
Renewing a historic landmark to support the future of academic life
Comer Hall stands as one of Auburn University’s most recognizable historic buildings, anchoring the campus with its classical presence and enduring architectural character. Over time, however, the building faced growing challenges, including aging systems, moisture infiltration, and interior spaces that no longer aligned with the needs of a contemporary academic environment.
Houser Walker Architecture led a comprehensive, phased renovation that carefully balances preservation with transformation. Early phases focused on stabilizing and restoring the building envelope, addressing water intrusion and extending the life of the historic structure. These foundational efforts ensured that the building’s defining elements, including its masonry, proportions, and architectural detailing, could be preserved with integrity.
Subsequent phases reimagined the interior to better serve the evolving needs of the Agriculture Department. The design introduces a more public and accessible ground level, creating classroom environments that support engagement and interaction, while relocating offices and research spaces to upper floors. Strategic interventions improve circulation, accessibility, and code compliance, including the integration of a new elevator and upgraded life-safety systems.
Throughout the project, the design approach is measured and precise, retaining what is essential, upgrading what is necessary, and aligning the building with the expectations of a modern campus. The result is a renewed academic environment that honors Comer Hall’s legacy while ensuring its continued relevance for future generations.
